Despite the divided opinions about wearing masks, the scientific consensus is clear—it is one of the most effective ways that we can protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our immediate community from spreading the coronavirus disease.
But did you know that you can still improve on the effectiveness of your mask by improving its fit?
As your partners in healthcare in Florida, we at Premium Healthcare Medical Center are listing down the ways that you can do so.
Before anything else, you must ensure the non-negotiables of wearing a mask, whatever type you have—it should fit snuggly, completely covering your nose and mouth, and it should not have any gaps. This practice is followed strictly in our medical center.
With that set, here are the ways you can improve your mask fit:
- Use the nose wires that usually come with your surgical mask.
You can buy or make a nose wire separately if you use cloth masks.
- Use mask filters and braces.
These devices are bought separately and work by tucking in the gaps and other loose areas of the mask to improve the fit.
- Do the fold, knot, and tuck technique.
This works for virtually any mask. You just need to fold your mask horizontally and knot the ear loops where they join at the edge, making sure to tuck the loose material under the edges.
To be very clear, wearing a mask will not protect you from contracting SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It will, however, prevent you from transmitting the virus to others.
This is why you must still practice established health measures such as social distancing, washing hands frequently & properly, and communicating with your primary care doctor in Miami, Florida, for your concerns.
